The Scarab's journey
When is it going to be?
The green scarab's journey, which is to say our '97 green citroen ax, will start on the 27th of december 2008 from Milan (Italy) and will finish in Bamako on the 8th of January.
What's the point of it?
We've been wanting to set off to Africa for such a long time and the dream of the atlantic ocean, the Sahara desert, the neverending praires, the dust covered paths and of the savanna had got hold of us. We then thought of a real travel , one filled with adventure, we wanted to achieve adventure to the extent that we bought a Citrroen ax, a car more than ten years old. Apart from travelling we also wanted to give ouselves an aim to achieve, and from this idea our Scarab's rally was born. We desired the most unique, most crazy, funniest way of exploring the mother of all continents: Africa. When the dry climate will gently touch the lands of Western Africa we will unleash our "green scarab" off to the south, with its 60 Cc and its 100,000 kms experience. We'll drive through Morocco, Western sahara and MAuritania to reach our final destination Bamako in the state of Mali.
The charity
The main challenge of the green Scarab is to reach Bamako ,where the NGO charity organization Abareka' Nandree is located. Once there we will donate our vehicle and the rest of the charity we have collected to the above mentioned Ngo to support its project.
The journey
The green Scarab's journey will start in Milan to reach its peak in Tangeri.
Just enough time for a drink with Lello in Marrakech and then off we go again, this expedition will touch some of the most fascinating ergs (io metterei corners ) of moroccan Sahara. We will then travel further down, along the atlantic coast and across the contended land of Western Sahara towards Dahkla. and again on the road through the corridor leading to MAuritania and its magnificent dunes, we will then push ourselves further down into Mali, and Bamako which lies perched on the banks of the Niger river, Timbouctou is just a step away...
Green Scarab On The Road
Milan – Bamako: less than 15 days to reach our destination. Our ride is not even 60 cc, it wasn't even in its golden days when it was new and shiny, but today, after 12 years it is mature enough to leave these grey roads and sail off to Africa (obviously with the help of a ferry from Genoa to Tangeri). In Africa there will be little asphalt, mostly there will be stones ,sand and ground waiting, there will ben no guide, no mechanical or logistic assistance. If our ride abandons us, we can only be in troubles ... unless we come across a caravan of Maures and we somehow manage to exchange our car for a camel or at least a fist of dates.
